Donald Trump says he'll endorse China's view that the self-governing island of Taiwan is really part of Chinese territory. His change of heart came during a telephone conversation with the Chinese president.

The Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says he hopes to build an unwavering alliance with the United States since he begins two days of talks with Donald Trump. Speaking in Washington, Mr. Abe said he hoped his visit marked the start of a new era of economic relations.

Large parts of Australia are in the grip of a three-day heat wave which has prompted warnings of bush fires and power blackouts. In parts of New South Wales, temperatures soared to over 47℃.

French police say a 16-year-old girl is among four people arrested by anti-terror police in Montpellier in southern France. They are suspected of planning an attack.
